The word hydroponics comes for the Greek Hydro (meaning water) and Ponos (to work), literally meaning waterwork.
The first hydroponic systems came from antiquity. In fact, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon and the Floating Gardens of the Aztecs were the first hydroponic systems. Thanks to the continuous flooding it was possible to cultivate food the whole year round.
The first successful hydroponic systems were developed in the 60's by Dr Gericke in California, USA.
During World War II these systems were adapted to provide GI's with fresh vegetables. The first hydroponic systems were adapted for commercial purposes for the production of vegetables and flowers in the 70's and 80's.
